Singles Ministry and Community Ministry
I am a graduate of Jacksonville High School, where I participated in girls basketball, choir, art and Future Homemakers of America. I am also a graduate of Lon Morris College, where I studied art, cheerleading and boys for 2 years. I attended Sam Houston State University for 1 year prior to my marriage. I finished my degree at Stephen F Austin State University, with a Bachelor's in Clothing & Textiles and a minor in Business.
I became a member of CBC in March 1998, and I joined the staff as part-time Minister to Single Adults in May 1999. My duties increased to full-time staff in 2005, and added Community Ministry in 2007.
It’s hard to pick just one favorite movie. I like a lot of different types. I love the classics, like Gone With the Wind. I also like the stories with a moral to them, like Facing the Giants & Fireproof, and I am looking forward to seeing Courageous. I love comedies, musicals, girly movies, and especially love animated films ... the creative talent it takes to make one of those is just mind-blowing to me! I even like a few action-packed, suspense-filled movies like the Bourne series…and then there’s Star Wars! Need I say more?
I have several favorite books. I loved the book Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. It forever changed my attitude about serving the under-resourced in our community. I also enjoyed the sequel What Difference Do It Make?. It’s a book of stories from people who read the first one and how it impacted their lives and the lives of the people around them. I love reading Bill Hybels’ books on leadership. Then there’s the book Pivotal Praying by John Hull and Tim Elmore. I picked it up at a conference I attended several years ago after attending a session by one of the authors. I had not read it until 2 years ago, and when I was going through a particularly difficult time in my life when I felt that all I could do was pray, it was a tremendous help to me and has altered my prayer life as a result. I also read the book The Help about a year and a half ago and am looking forward to seeing the movie. Having grown up during the desegregation era, it gave me an adult perspective on the subtle ways we as humans use prejudice to cover up our own ignorance.
Without a doubt my very favorite spot to visit was Ontario, Canada. The air was so clean, the landscape was so vividly colored, the towns and cities we visited were impeccably kept, and my goal is to one day take my children and their families to see it for themselves—or maybe I should just let them take me!! The Colorado mountains are my second favorite. I guess if I had to choose the mountains or the beach, I would choose the mountains hands down! I just love the cool mountain air—in the summer time, of course. The other side of me loved New York City and having the opportunity to see the sights, to go to the theater, and enjoy all the aspects of city life without actually having to live there.
I love to read, we already established that. I also love to cook and enjoy collecting cookbooks from lots of the places I have visited. Most of all I love the fiber arts. I love to sew, to do needlework, to crochet, to knit, to quilt—just to name a few. I have never learned the art of weaving, but would love to take a class some time just to give it a try. I also play MahJong on Tuesday evenings with a group of my "buds", and we have a lot of fun. I love game nights with our Single Adults and road trips to Alto Frio!
When it comes to dessert, why would I have to pick just one? I love cheesecake, pound cake, fruit pies and cobblers, cream pies, brownies w/walnuts, sweet potato pie, mincemeat pie—just to name a few!
It would be impossible for me to pick a single favorite Bible verse. Some of the ones that mean the most to me, though, are:
Phil. 4:13—"I can do all things through Christ who gives me the strength"
Phil. 4:19—"But my God shall supply all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus"
Jeremiah 29:11—" For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you a future and a hope.
And one of my new favorite verses is found in Isaiah 7:9b "If you do not believe me, how can I protect you?" NLT
These all serve to remind me daily that by myself I am nothing, but with God I can accomplish great things when I let Him provide me with all I need, and trust Him to do the work in and through me He has set out to do. He has protected me throughout my life, provided for my needs and blessed me with a wonderful church family and 2 beautiful daughters and now their families with which to share my life. I am forever grateful.
